Nakba 63 Commemoration Saturday May 14 2011
On behalf of Palestine Cultural Office and US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) activists, I am inviting you to attend and sponsor our very important Nakba 63 Commemoration held on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Burton Manor at 27777 Schoolcraft (I-96 & Inkster) in Livonia, MI 48150. The 63rd anniversary of Al-Nakba comes in the midst of mass upheavals in numerous Arab capitals, as manifest of our peoples’ self- empowerment confronting their dictatorships bare-chested. Our heroic Arab people have proven a “bare hand CAN confront and overcome al-makhraz [iron poke].” Millions of ordinary people filled Tahrir Square in Cairo and successfully toppled the singular strategic ally of Israel. Our people in other Arab capitals are hell bent on toppling the very top icons of their oppression. Palestinian ‘house cleaning’ is on the way and imminent in both Ramallah and Gaza. Each of us must continue doing one’s part, closing in on icons of our oppression.

For this year’s Nakbah 63 program, we host internationally renowned icon Helen Thomas the White House correspondent for over 50 years, Palestine-1948 activist Awad Abdul Fattah who is the Secretary General of the National Democratic Assembly Party in Palestine; and Georgetown University Adjunct Professor, scholar, and lead Palestinian activists Nora Erakat. We are also hosting Palestinian percussionist Tareq Rantisi and vocalist virtuoso (Arab zither) Qanunist, Ali Amr in a premiere performance for our Detroit audience. This event promises to be a memorable one.

Arna's Children- A fundraising event for the Jenin Freedom Theatre
Juliano Mer-Khamis, actor, director, peace activist and founder of the Jenin Freedom Theater was murdered in front of his theater on Monday April 4th. In the wake of this tragic event, we commemorate Juliano's life and life's work by screening 'Arna's Children', a film he directed about his mother's work and out of which he formed the ground-breaking Jenin Freedom Theater.

About 'Arna's Children':

*********About the Jenin Freedom Theater:

Having grown up amidst a violent military occupation, the young generation in the Jenin area struggle with ongoing fears, depression and trauma. At the same time, few opportunities exist for these youngsters to find positive and creative outlets for their emotions which can allow them to develop a healthy and meaningful sense of themselves and their surroundings.
The Freedom Theatre therefore offers children, youth and young adults in the Jenin area a safe space in which they are free to express themselves, to explore their creativity and emotions through culture and arts. It provides them with opportunities to develop the skills, self-knowledge and confidence which can empower them to challenge present realities and to speak out in their own society and beyond.
The Freedom Theatre believes that theatre and the arts have a crucial role to play in building up a free and healthy society.
By encouraging freedom of expression and respect for individual rights, cultural activities break taboos, stimulate cooperation and enhance understanding of the other. Both for artist and audience, the creative process consists of imagining alternatives, rearranging reality and accepting new ways of life.
